Summer Meadows in Mixed Media ~  Frances Winder

An exciting workshop with this popular tutor, well known for her landscapes and depicting reflections on water, here we are anticipating the warmth of summer meadows to come!

This course would develop tonal contrast, composition, and add elements of drama to your paintings of Summer Meadows. We explore colour banding to give you a feeling of distance and space, as well as placing strong foreground elements in both plant types and colour emphasis.

Suitable for all paint techniques, but I will demonstrate in acrylic and watercolour techniques. We also discuss the power of scale in your work, the power of large pieces or the intensity of a small, distilled image.

Bring the materials you are comfortable with, but also bring plenty of paper to experiment with during the course. Gouache would work as well.

The workshop is suitable for all abilities,  if you are a beginner Frances recommends good paper to work on.

Frances writes ...I work from sketches, backed up with photos if I need more information. Please bring reference material with you, sketches, photos or just ideas you like. This course is all about exploring techniques

Dates for this course - see the table below to book:

Sunday 6th July 2025

Typically this course runs with around 9-10 students.

Please bring: Students need to bring their own paints and brushes, paper etc. a list will be sent out with your confirmation.

About the Artist

Now living in Kendal, Cumbria, I work from home and in association with Green Door Studio artists. I still do some freelance work but now concentrate primarily on my own work. I am very interested in exploring the printing process, especially collagraphs, and also in ceramics and machine embroidery. My main fields include painting  – watercolour, gouache and oil pastel, acrylic – they all fascinate me and draw me into the exploration of new approaches and techniques. I love the wilderness areas, walking and gardening. Colour and light are important to me and provide the stimulus for many of my recent paintings. I am also drawn increasingly to more abstract expression of the landscapes and forms which have always attracted me.
